I’m home today, which is a rarity for mid-week. But, today is a snow day! Some of us don’t have to say goodbye to those when we graduate public school. In fact, this winter has been full of snow days (I believe this is number 6 so far)! So it seemed fitting today that I write about one of my new favorite books. I just discovered it at my local library this month: One Snowy Day – written by Diana Murray and illustrated by Diana Toledano.
This book was in my hands within five seconds of entering the library because it was a new book and was strategically placed on a bookshelf right when you enter the front doors, just waiting for a book lover to take home and enjoy. Aren’t librarians magical? The simple, charming, bright cover art was exactly what I’m attracted to. I was hoping the text would be simple, charming, and bright as well, and I wasn’t disappointed.
Not only was this story ideal for teaching my students about the joys of a snowy day, but it was so enjoyable and easy to read that I purchased a copy for myself to keep forever and have my own kids cherish.

The rhyming text flows rhythmically while you read. And one amazing surprise is that this book is actually a counting book. The story builds from one sleepy puppy in the morning, to ten perfect snowballs between friends, and back down to one sleepy puppy exhausted after a fun-filled day.
But, possibly my favorite part of the story is the opening and closing lines. It’s a sort of beautiful blanket that wraps the reader up in the wonder of snowfall. Words like ‘spinning’, ‘twirling’, ‘fluffy’, and ‘silent’ remind the child inside every reader of just how enchanting snowfall truly is. And it’s helped me rekindle my own joy found in these cold, snowy days.
