My Goodnight Book

January 22, 2019Poppy's Favorites2

High-waisted pants. Oversized sweaters. Denim…anything. We can thank the 90s for many of our current fashion (re)trends, and honestly I’m not going to complain. Although I was born in the 80s, I’m a 90s kid at heart, and I grew up sporting overalls, saddle oxfords, neon, windbreakers…if it was worn on Clarissa Explains It All, I tried to make it happen. Fashion has recognized what was great about the 90s – now I vote that we show 90s books some love.

In an era where we all have a lot going on, I think we could all enjoy a little 90s simplicity.

My Goodnight Book by Eloise Wilkin is like a blast from the past. Every illustration in this book is like taking a trip back in time. This was one of my absolute favorite books as a child (you can tell by how absolutely worn out it is), and I think it’s because it looked just like my life. Seriously, this book captures my childhood with every detail.

So why am I recommending it to you?

Are you a 90s kid? Then this book will get you right in the feels. If for no other reason, I think it would be so fun for you to flip through it and see if any details remind you of your own childhood.

But nostalgia aside – this book is adorably simple. There’s nothing flashy or complicated. The sweet little girl goes through her nightly routine, gets tucked in, and goes to sleep. It’s simple enough that any child can follow along, and it encourages ownership. It’s told from the perspective of the little girl – she knows her bedtime routine and your little one can know theirs too. In an era where we all have a lot going on, I think we could all enjoy a little 90s simplicity.

When I was little, I loved reading books or playing with toys that belonged to my parents. And as I enjoyed the things they had as kids, it showed me how I was similar to them. It made me feel like we would’ve been friends if we had all been kids at the same time. I hope that someday Penelope will think this little book is charming because it was her mama’s, and because that even though it shows a different time, her story is the same.
